'The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian,' by Sherman Alexie In the books' defense, we've written why they deserve a place in our schools, libraries and society: With that in mind, USA TODAY staff looked at challenged and banned books and chose those that are meaningful to them. For many, particularly children and young adults, school and public libraries are their only means to access literature. But that is only true for those with the financial resources to do that. Sure, there is the argument that we can bypass places such as public libraries and purchase a book. Even if it happens only once, it is one time too many. It is by the power of these officials, that a book can go from challenged to banned in a particular school district or public library. What happens when a book is challenged in school boards and public libraries? Titles can be removed from school curriculum or library shelves. ![]() ![]() In the New Testament a descent to Hades may simply refer to someone's death and disembodied existence. Hades is the state in which all the dead exist. He is the "Lord of both the dead and the living" ( Rom 14:9 ). For Christ has established authority over all powers ( Eph 1:20-23 ), even the one who "holds the power of death" ( Heb 2:14 2 Tim 1:10 ). In the New Testament Christ's revelation and salvific work decisively shape this term. This indeterminate picture of Sheol and its Greek translation, Hades, allowed varying interpretations by intertestamental Jews. But the precise expectation of a bodily resurrection for the wicked and the related conception of Sheol as an intermediate state is late ( Dan 12:2 ). The Old Testament confidently awaits God's victory over Sheol ( Psalm 98 Isa 25:8 Hosea 13:14 ). While an antagonist, Sheol ultimately exists at Yahweh's service ( 1 Sam 2:6 Psalm 55:23 139:8 ). 2-3), the Old Testament personifies Sheol as the power of Satan and his demonic hosts ( Job 18:14 Psalm 18:4-5 Isa 28:15 Jer 9:21 ). ![]() Since death is not a natural occurrence but invaded creation through the fall and Satan's destructive work (Gen. These conscious souls face a lethargic existence, apparently without reward or retribution ( Job 10:21 Eccl 9:10 Isa 14:10 ). Sheol refers primarily to death and the abode of the dead, both godly and ungodly ( Gen 37:25 Psalm 16:10 88:10-12 Isa 14:9 ). The New Testament use of Hades ( hades ) builds on its Hebrew parallel, Sheol (se'ol), which was the preferred translation in the Septuagint. 1.Greek term widely used to denote the deity of the underworld and the abode of the dead. Zeus was the father of the gods, the god of the sky, of thunder, and of lightning. He was well-known for his frequent transformations into animals, in the form of which he abducted the women he was in love with. He would transform into various creatures, such as an eagle, a swan, or a bull, animals that were widely considered symbols of physical strength, power, and superiority. Zeus transformed into an eagle in order to kidnap the young man Ganymedes, while for the abduction of the young Europa he was transformed into a bull. In many of his representations, Zeus is depicted with a great golden-feathered eagle called Aetos Dios, serving as his personal messenger and companion by his throne. ![]() Known as the sister and husband of Zeus, and thus the queen of the gods, and particularly of women, Hera was also the protector of marriage and childbirth. Her frequent animal associations included the cow, the peacock, the cuckoo, and sometimes the lion. The young cow (Damalis or portis) was the major animal considered especially sacred for Hera since it was closely associated with nurturing and providing protection for her young, just like Hera used to protect the sacred union of marriage and to support women. At the same time, the cuckoo symbolized her love for her husband, and the peacock symbolized her beauty. The god of the sea and of earthquakes, Poseidon had also some animals sacred to him. Among them, the most prominent was the horse, a symbol of valor and beauty since he himself fathered many horses, the best-known being the winged horse Pegasus by the Gorgon Medusa. Other sacred animals to Poseidon were the dolphin, as well as other fish since the famous Trevi Fountain in Rome has a sculpture of a winged Hippocampus alongside the god of the sea. Poseidon was also associated with the bull, and most famously the Cretan bull, perhaps the most famous symbol of the Minoan civilization that flourished in Crete.Īccording to myth, the god sent it to Minos, the legendary king of the island, and he made his wife Pasiphae fall in love with it, thus giving birth to the monster Minotaur. Known as the goddess of wisdom and war, Athena was mainly associated with the owl, since this bird was considered very cunning and deadly, but also very wise, at least by the look of it. Perhaps the animal’s ability to see in the dark with its exceptional night vision symbolized the goddess’ ability to ‘see’ through the eyes of wisdom, where others cannot. ![]() ![]() ![]() The upper side of the leaf is not hairy, or it has very few hairs The underside of the leaf is not hairy, or it has very few hairs The fruits do not have thorn-like defensive structuresįinal leaf segment length (compound lvs only)įinal leaf segment length to width ratio (compound lvs only) the plant has basal placentation, where one or a few ovules develop at the base of a simple or compound ovary. The fruit is an achene (dry, usually one-seeded, does not separate or split open at maturity) The fruit is obovoid (egg-shaped, but with the widest point above the middle) The fruit is an achene (dry, indehiscent, and usually one-seeded) the achenes are another shape in outline. The achenes are perpendicular to the plane of the perianth (vertical) The stamens are not attached to one another The stamens are not attached to the petals or tepals the sepal outline is ovate (widest below the middle and broadly tapering at both ends).the sepal outline is oblong (rectangular, but with rounded ends).the sepal outline is lanceolate (lance-shaped narrow, gradually tapering from the base to the tip).the sepal outline is eliiptic (widest near the middle and tapering at both ends). The sepals do not have appendages on them The sepals are green or brown, and leaf-like in texture The petals of the flower do not have folds or plaitsĪll the flowers have both carpels and stamens (synoecious) The petals are thin and delicate, and pigmented (colored other than green or brown) The flower includes two cycles of petal- or sepal-like structures The ovary is above the point of petal and/or sepal attachment There are no noticeable marks on the petals The flowers are arrayed in a spiral around the inflorescence axis or branches, or occur singly, or in several ranks The axis of the inflorescence has hairs entirely without glands ![]() The flower has both pollen- and seed-producing parts The flower has a superior ovary, and lacks a hypanthium The filament is smooth, with no hairs or scales There are no cleistogamous flowers on the plan The carpel is solitary or (if 2 or more) the carpels are not fused to one another There are two or more ways to evenly divide the calyx (the calyx is radially symmetrical) The anthers have narrow slits or furrows that run lengthwise along the anthers The anthers show no hint of a pink, reddish or purplish tint The fruit is dry but does not split open when ripe There are five petals, sepals, or tepals in the flowerīoth the petals and sepals are separate and not fused There are two or more ways to evenly divide the flower (the flower is radially symmetrical) the edge of the leaf blade is entire (has no teeth or lobes).the edge of the leaf blade has lobes, or it has both teeth and lobes.the leaves are simple (i.e., lobed or unlobed but not separated into leaflets)Īlternate: there is one leaf per node along the stem.the leaves are compound (made up of two or more discrete leaflets. ![]() ![]() ![]() The trigger interlock and battery retainer latch prevent accidental startup. These reviews describe the key features of each cordless string trimmer and how the models performed in our backyard tests. Along with cutting power, we tested for battery runtime, maneuverability, and operator comfort and determined the best battery trimmer by category. In addition to trimming the grass zones, we used the 36V, 56V, and 80V models to cut through woody, viny growth in natural areas. To earn a spot in our lineup, the lightweight 20-volt (V) trimmers had to deliver a clean, crisp cut in both clean and weedy grass sections. We put each trimmer through its paces in a variety of real-world scenarios: “clean” lawn grass, weedy grass, and natural areas featuring coarse, weedy seedlings and vines. Although some of the trimmers offer lower power settings that could extend runtime, we found that the lower settings simply made them less capable when it came to coarse weeds, so we ran them at full power for testing. Most trimmers arrived with the batteries about 25 percent charged right out of the box, but a full charge allowed us to gauge runtime at full power. To truly test these battery-powered string trimmers, we started by assembling the tools and charging the batteries. This set of precons also brought a total of 17 new cards for Commander with each deck, and at the cost of about $40, the value of a lot of its singles is something to keep in mind when you consider cards like Deflecting Swat. One of the decks that strays furthest from the Ikoria set mechanics is also one of its most interesting ones. Let’s see some decks that may be a little more expensive. There aren’t any big-ticket cards that you can resell to make your money back, but the deck’s value sits around the $60 mark, which is 50% more than MSRP. There isn’t much depth beyond playing your zombie creatures and then overwhelming your opponents with either sheer number of creatures or powerful game-ending spells like Dark Salvation. The deck’s overall strategy is simple, too. This helps maximize the value you get from sacrificing creatures, which is something zombie strategies are great at. The deck’s commander, Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver, is a zombie warrior that gives you a 2/2 decayed zombie whenever one of your non-decayed zombies dies. In addition, Gearbox has provided a lot of graphical options to tweak, something that will definitely please a lot of PC owners with weaker graphics cards. Unfortunately, though, our card was unable to keep a constant 60fps experience at 4K resolutions with all settings enabled (there were lots of drops during our firefights at mid-40s). Our GTX690 handled the game with a minimum framerate of 75fps and an average framerate of 110fps. NVIDIA’s SLI profile offers incredible SLI scaling (provided you are not CPU limited). A single GTX680 is more than enough for constant 60fps at 1080p with max settings (and PhysX High enabled). Regarding its graphics cards requirements, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is quite easy on the GPUs. By doing this, some may overcome the lack of ideal multi-core CPU support via ‘raw brutal force.’ The only way to increase performance on those weaker systems is via overclock. While i3, i5 and i7 CPUs will not encounter any problem running this game, those with weaker quad-cores will most probably run into performance troubles. Given the fact that the game is unable to take proper advantage of more than three CPU cores, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel can be considered a CPU-bound title. Still – and for what is worth – our simulated dual-core system was able to handle the game with constant 60fps at max settings. Not only that, but as we can see the game is not able to even scale on more than 4 CPU cores. Our simulated tri-core, simulated quad-core and our hexa-core systems performed exactly the same during the same scenarios.
